BODY PIERCING AFTERCARE
At Essential Ink Body Art, we believe great piercings deserve great healing.
Healing a piercing is a gradual process that requires patience, quality jewelry, and consistent care. Every body heals differently, but proper aftercare can help support a smoother healing experience and reduce unnecessary irritation.
CLEANING YOUR PIERCING
We Recommend:
• Sterile saline wound wash containing only:
Water + 0.9% sodium chloride
OR
• A clean water rinse in the shower
HOW TO CLEAN
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your piercing.
- Spray sterile saline directly onto the piercing area 1–2 times daily.
- Allow the saline to soften and loosen any dried discharge.
- Rinse well in the shower to remove residue.
- Pat dry gently with clean disposable paper products or allow to air dry.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During healing, it is normal to experience:
• Mild swelling
• Tenderness
• Bruising
• Itching
• Clear, white, or pale yellow discharge that forms “crusties”
This is part of the normal healing process.
Piercings often heal from the outside before the inside. Even if a piercing looks healed, the internal tissue may still be delicate.
WHAT TO AVOID
To help minimize irritation and support healing, avoid:
• Touching or rotating jewelry unnecessarily
• Sleeping directly on the piercing
• Harsh soaps, alcohol, peroxide, or ointments
• Swimming in pools, lakes, rivers, or hot tubs during early healing
• Oral contact on healing piercings
• Tight clothing or friction against the piercing
• Removing jewelry during healing
JEWELRY MATTERS
Quality jewelry plays a major role in healing success.
At Essential Ink Body Art, we use implant-grade materials designed for long-term wear and healing compatibility, including:
• Implant-grade titanium
• Solid 14k & 18k gold
• Internally threaded and threadless jewelry
Proper sizing and fit are equally important. Jewelry that is too long, too short, too heavy, or poorly fitted can cause unnecessary irritation.
DOWNSIZING IS IMPORTANT
Many piercings are initially fitted with slightly longer jewelry to allow room for swelling.
As swelling decreases, downsizing to a properly fitted post may be recommended to help reduce movement, irritation, and snagging.
If you are unsure whether your jewelry should be downsized, contact our studio for a checkup.
HEALING TIMES
Healing times vary greatly depending on placement, anatomy, lifestyle, and overall health.
Some piercings may take several months to over a year to fully mature.
Consistency and patience matter more than rushing the process.
WHEN TO CONTACT YOUR PIERCER
Please contact us if you experience:
• Excessive swelling
• Severe redness or heat
• Thick dark discharge
• Jewelry embedding
• Significant pain after the initial healing period
• Trauma or snagging
We are happy to help guide you through the healing process.

How often should I clean my piercing?
Most piercings should be cleaned 1–2 times daily using sterile saline solution.
Can I rotate my jewelry while healing?
No. Rotating or moving jewelry unnecessarily can irritate the piercing channel and delay healing.
When should I downsize my jewelry?
This varies by piercing placement, but many piercings benefit from downsizing after initial swelling reduces.
What jewelry materials are best for healing?
Implant-grade titanium and solid gold are commonly recommended for initial healing piercings.
Is crusting normal?
Yes. Light crusting or dried discharge is a normal part of the healing process.
