MINOR PIERCING AFTERCARE

Helping younger clients heal comfortably and confidently is an important part of what we do at Essential Ink Body Art.

Healing a piercing takes patience, consistency, and support from both the client and parent or guardian. This page is designed to help families understand what to expect during the healing process and how to care for new piercings safely.

We also recommend downloading the official APP aftercare brochure below for additional guidance.

GENERAL CLEANING GUIDELINES

We Recommend:

• Sterile saline wound wash containing only:
Water + 0.9% sodium chloride

OR

• A gentle clean water rinse during showers

HOW TO CLEAN A PIERCING

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before touching the piercing.
  2. Spray sterile saline onto the area 1–2 times daily.
  3. Allow any dried discharge to soften naturally.
  4. Rinse well during showers.
  5. Pat dry gently using clean disposable paper products.

Avoid excessive cleaning. Over-cleaning can irritate healing tissue.

WHAT IS NORMAL DURING HEALING?

It is normal to experience:

• Mild redness
• Swelling
• Tenderness
• Bruising
• Light crusting or discharge

Healing can take several months depending on the piercing placement, lifestyle, and anatomy.

Piercings may appear healed on the outside before the inside is fully healed.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR MINORS

Healing piercings require extra awareness during school, sports, sleeping, and daily activities.

Please remind younger clients to avoid:

• Touching or twisting jewelry
• Allowing friends to touch piercings
• Sleeping directly on healing piercings
• Picking at crusting
• Removing jewelry early
• Swimming during initial healing when possible

Consistent care and minimizing irritation are some of the biggest factors in successful healing.

SPORTS & ACTIVITIES

If participating in sports, dance, cheer, or physical activities:

• Be mindful of snagging risks
• Avoid unnecessary trauma to the piercing
• Discuss protective options with your piercer if needed

Never remove healing jewelry without speaking to your piercer first.

JEWELRY QUALITY MATTERS

At Essential Ink Body Art, we use high-quality materials selected for healing compatibility and comfort, including:

• Implant-grade titanium
• Solid 14k & 18k gold
• Internally threaded and threadless jewelry

Proper jewelry sizing and fit are essential for healing success.

DOWNSIZING IS IMPORTANT

Some piercings are intentionally fitted with slightly longer jewelry to allow room for swelling.

As swelling decreases, downsizing may be recommended to:

• Reduce irritation
• Minimize snagging
• Improve comfort
• Support healthy healing

We encourage parents and guardians to schedule recommended follow-up visits.

WHEN TO CONTACT YOUR PIERCER

Please contact us if you notice:

• Excessive swelling
• Jewelry embedding
• Severe redness or heat
• Thick dark discharge
• Persistent pain
• Trauma or snagging

We are always happy to answer questions and help guide the healing process.

PARENT & GUARDIAN SUPPORT

A healing piercing is easier when parents and guardians help encourage:

• Consistent cleaning
• Good hygiene habits
• Proper sleeping positions
• Attendance at follow-up appointments
• Avoiding unnecessary jewelry touching

Healing is a team effort.

NEED HELP?

Questions about healing, jewelry sizing, downsizing, or irritation?

Visit Essential Ink Body Art for a piercing checkup, jewelry consultation, or follow-up appointment.

How often should my child clean their piercing?

Most piercings should be cleaned 1–2 times daily using sterile saline solution.

Is swelling normal after a piercing?

Yes. Mild swelling and tenderness are common during early healing.

Can my child rotate the jewelry?

No. Rotating or twisting jewelry can irritate the piercing and delay healing.

Why does jewelry need downsizing?

Initial jewelry is often longer to allow room for swelling. Downsizing helps reduce irritation once swelling decreases.

What jewelry materials are safest for healing?

Implant-grade titanium and high-quality gold are commonly recommended for healing piercings.
