Shopping for body jewelry online should be fun—not a crash course in measurements, threading, anatomy, and tiny pieces of metal.

But unlike earrings from a traditional jewelry store, professional body jewelry isn't one-size-fits-all. The right piece depends on your piercing, anatomy, placement, angle, gauge, and measurements.

We've created this guide to help you understand exactly what you're buying and choose your jewelry with confidence.

Body Jewelry Isn't One-Size-Fits-All

Two people can have the exact same piercing and need completely different jewelry sizes.

For example, two healed conch piercings may require different post lengths because of differences in anatomy, piercing placement, and angle.

That's why you'll see specific measurements listed on our jewelry whenever applicable.

When shopping, pay attention to:

• Wearable length
• Ring diameter
• Decorative-end dimensions
• Connection type

Knowing where you want to wear a piece is helpful—but knowing your jewelry measurements is even better.

What Does Gauge Mean?

Gauge refers to the thickness of the jewelry that passes through your piercing.

One slightly confusing thing about gauge sizing is that the numbers work backward:

18g = approximately 1.0 mm
16g = approximately 1.2 mm
14g = approximately 1.6 mm

As the gauge number gets smaller, the jewelry gets thicker.

Never force jewelry into a piercing if you're unsure of your gauge.

What Is Wearable Length?

For straight posts and barbells, wearable length is the portion of the jewelry that sits inside the piercing channel between the two ends.

A post that's too short may put pressure on your tissue.

A post that's unnecessarily long can move excessively, snag, change how decorative jewelry sits, and generally be annoying.

Professional piercers often use longer jewelry initially to accommodate swelling and later downsize once that extra room is no longer needed.

If you're replacing an existing piece, don't assume the length you were initially pierced with is the length you should purchase for a healed piercing.

Understanding Ring Diameter

Ring diameter is measured across the inside of the ring.

A difference of just 1–2 mm can dramatically change how a ring fits.

The right diameter depends on your anatomy, piercing placement, angle, and how closely you'd like the ring to sit.

This is why a ring labeled for a particular piercing isn't guaranteed to fit everyone with that piercing.

Decorative Ends and Posts Are Often Sold Separately

This is one of the most important things to understand when shopping for professional body jewelry.

That beautiful little gemstone, moon, snake, flower, or gold design you're looking at may be a decorative end only.

The flatback post that goes through your piercing may be a separate component.

If you're purchasing an end separately, you'll need a compatible post.

Threadless Jewelry

Threadless jewelry uses a removable decorative end with a small pin that fits inside a compatible hollow post.

The pin is gently bent to create tension, which holds the jewelry together.

One of the advantages of threadless jewelry is versatility. A compatible post can often be paired with many different decorative ends, allowing you to change your look without purchasing an entirely new piece of jewelry.

Threadless ends and posts must still be compatible in size and construction, so check the product specifications before ordering.

Internally Threaded Jewelry

Internally threaded jewelry has threading inside the post.

The decorative end has a small threaded portion that screws into it.

Threaded ends and posts must have compatible threading and gauge. An internally threaded end isn't automatically compatible with every internally threaded post.

When in doubt, ask us before ordering.

Jewelry Is Sold Individually

Unless a product specifically states otherwise, our body jewelry is sold individually—not in pairs.

If you'd like matching jewelry for both ears, for example, you'll generally need to order a quantity of two.

We'll clearly identify what is included with each product.

What Do Jewelry Dimensions Mean?

Decorative jewelry is typically measured in millimeters.

A product may be listed as:

Dimensions: 4 mm × 6 mm

These measurements describe the approximate physical size of the decorative portion of the jewelry.

Product photography is intentionally enlarged so you can see tiny details, gemstones, textures, and finishes. Always check the listed dimensions rather than judging size from the photograph alone.

A few millimeters can make a surprisingly big difference on an ear or nose.

These are suggestions, not guarantees of fit.

A piece that looks incredible in one person's conch may not work with another person's anatomy or piercing placement.

Can I Wear This in a Fresh Piercing?

You'll see our Fresh Piercing Friendly classification on applicable jewelry.

YES — FRESH PIERCING FRIENDLY

The material and design may be appropriate for an initial piercing when professionally selected and correctly sized for the anatomy and placement.

PLACEMENT DEPENDENT

The material may be appropriate for initial piercing, but the design, dimensions, weight, or style may not be suitable for every fresh piercing.

HEALED PIERCINGS ONLY

This piece or style is intended for fully healed piercings.

Remember: good material doesn't automatically make every jewelry design appropriate for every fresh piercing.

Proper sizing, placement, anatomy, construction, weight, and design matter too.

What About Chains and Charms?

Chains and charms are a fun way to add movement, texture, and personality to an existing jewelry setup.

They're generally intended for fully healed piercings.

Chains also require properly fitted jewelry. Excessively long posts combined with chains can create unnecessary movement and snagging.

Materials Matter

Not everything marketed as “body jewelry” is created equally.

Can I Install My Jewelry Myself?

Some healed piercings can be changed at home if you know your jewelry size, understand the connection, and are comfortable installing it.

But tiny jewelry has an impressive ability to disappear into bathroom sinks, carpets, and alternate dimensions.

If something doesn't seem to fit, don't force it.

Incorrect installation can damage jewelry and irritate your piercing.

Jewelry for a Healing Piercing

If your piercing is still healing, we strongly recommend having jewelry changes performed by a professional piercer.

Changing jewelry too early, installing an incorrectly sized piece, or choosing a style that isn't appropriate for the stage of healing can create unnecessary problems.

Sometimes a jewelry change during healing is necessary—but that's different from changing jewelry simply because you're ready for something new.
