ORAL PIERCING AFTERCARE
Oral piercings can heal beautifully with proper care, quality jewelry, and patience.
At Essential Ink Body Art, we follow APP-inspired aftercare practices designed to support healthy healing and long-term comfort.
Healing times vary from person to person, but consistent aftercare and minimizing irritation are key.
EXPECT SOME SWELLING
Swelling is normal during the first several days after an oral piercing.
To help reduce swelling:
• Sleep with your head elevated
• Stay hydrated
• Use cold drinks or ice chips
• Avoid unnecessary talking or playing with jewelry
• Consider anti-inflammatory medications if approved by your physician
Long periods of talking, smoking, alcohol use, and spicy foods may increase swelling and irritation during early healing.
ORAL CLEANING
Use An Alcohol-Free Mouth Rinse
Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash:
• After eating
• After smoking (if applicable)
• Before bed
• Upon waking
Do not over-rinse. Excessive mouthwash use may irritate healing tissue.
EXTERNAL CLEANING (LIP PIERCINGS)
For piercings with external components such as lip piercings:
• Clean the outside using sterile saline wound wash
• Rinse away any residue in the shower
• Pat dry with clean disposable paper products
WHAT TO AVOID
During healing, avoid:
• Playing with or clicking jewelry against teeth
• Oral sexual contact during early healing
• Sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking devices
• Smoking when possible
• Alcohol-based mouthwash
• Harsh toothpaste that causes irritation
• Chewing gum excessively
• Touching jewelry with unwashed hands
FOOD & DRINK TIPS
For the first several days:
• Eat slowly
• Choose softer foods if needed
• Take smaller bites
• Avoid extremely spicy or acidic foods if irritating
• Avoid excessively hot beverages while swelling is present
Healing tissue can be sensitive, especially during the first week.
JEWELRY DOWNSIZING IS ESSENTIAL
Initial oral jewelry is intentionally longer to accommodate swelling.
Once swelling decreases, downsizing is extremely important.
Wearing jewelry that is too long for too long can increase risks of:
• Tooth or gum irritation
• Jewelry biting or snagging
• Excessive movement
• Long-term oral damage
We strongly recommend returning for a downsizing appointment once advised by your piercer.
DENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
Healthy oral habits help support healthy piercings.
Continue:
• Brushing regularly with a soft-bristle toothbrush
• Staying hydrated
• Maintaining routine dental hygiene
Monitor for:
• Gum recession
• Tooth irritation
• Excessive jewelry contact with teeth
If you notice concerns, contact your piercer promptly.
NORMAL HEALING SIGNS
During healing, it is normal to experience:
• Swelling
• Tenderness
• Increased saliva production
• Mild bruising
• Temporary speech adjustments
These symptoms generally improve gradually.
WHEN TO CONTACT YOUR PIERCER
Please contact us if you experience:
• Severe or worsening swelling
• Jewelry embedding
• Significant bleeding
• Thick dark discharge
• Excessive pain after the initial healing period
• Signs of tooth or gum irritation
We are happy to help guide you through the healing process.

At Essential Ink Body Art, we use high-quality materials selected for comfort and healing compatibility, including:
• Implant-grade titanium
