Why Should You Care If Your Piercer Is an APP Member?

Maybe you’ve already picked the placement. Maybe you’ve been saving jewelry inspiration for months. Or maybe you just woke up today and thought, I need another hole in my ear.
Then, while looking for a piercing studio, you see three little letters:
APP.
So...what exactly does that mean?
And more importantly:
Why should you, as a client, care?
At Essential Ink Body Art, we’re proud to be home to Association of Professional Piercers (APP) Member Piercers. But we don’t expect our clients to automatically know what that means—or choose us simply because there’s an APP logo on our door.
What matters is what those standards can mean for you, your body, and your piercing experience.
So let’s talk about it.
First: What Is the APP?
The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to disseminating health and safety information about body piercing to piercers, healthcare professionals, legislators, and the public.
APP membership isn't simply a matter of paying dues and receiving a logo.
Piercers seeking membership must demonstrate that they and the facility where they work meet specific membership requirements related to areas such as jewelry, sterilization, infection control, studio setup, and professional practices.
That distinction matters.
APP membership does not mean that the APP “certifies” a piercer's skill or guarantees the outcome of a piercing. It also doesn't mean that every great piercer must be an APP member.
What it does tell you is that the member has voluntarily gone through a process to demonstrate compliance with an established set of health and safety requirements.
As a client, that's useful information.
You Don't See Most of What Makes a Piercing Safe
When you get pierced, you probably notice the things happening directly in front of you.
The jewelry.
The mark.
The needle.
The piercing itself.
But some of the most important parts of professional piercing happen before you ever sit down in the piercing room.
How are instruments processed?
How is equipment sterilized?
How is the piercing room cleaned and disinfected?
How are clean and contaminated items kept separate?
What happens to reusable equipment after a procedure?
How is jewelry prepared before it's placed into a fresh piercing?
How does the piercer prevent cross-contamination while working?
These aren't particularly glamorous parts of piercing, and they don't make exciting Instagram photos.
But they're incredibly important.
One reason APP membership matters to us is that it puts attention on the things happening behind the scenes, not just the finished piercing you see online.
The Jewelry Going Into Your Body Matters, Too
Two pieces of body jewelry can look nearly identical from across a jewelry case and be very different in quality.
When we're choosing jewelry for a fresh piercing, we're looking beyond whether something is cute.
We care about things like:
- Material
- Surface finish
- Construction
- Threading
- Appropriate sizing
- Manufacturer documentation
- Suitability for an initial piercing
At Essential Ink, you'll find options including implant-grade titanium and solid gold, with jewelry available across a range of price points.
And this part is particularly important to us:
Professional piercing shouldn't require buying the most expensive jewelry in the case.
We love beautiful gold and genuine gemstones. We can absolutely build you the fancy ear of your dreams.
But if your budget calls for a simple implant-grade titanium piece instead?
That's okay.
You still deserve a professionally performed piercing with quality jewelry.
APP standards aren't about making piercing more exclusive. For us, they're part of making informed, professional piercing available to the people who trust us.
Your Anatomy Should Matter More Than the Sale
Sometimes you walk into the studio wanting a specific piercing and hear exactly what you hoped to hear:
“Yep! Your anatomy looks great for it.”
And sometimes you don't.
Certain piercings require particular anatomical features to have a reasonable chance at healing and remaining viable long-term.
That means there may be times when we'll recommend a different placement, different jewelry, or not performing the piercing at all.
We know that's disappointing.
But we'd rather lose a piercing fee than perform something we don't believe is appropriate for your anatomy.
Your body comes before the sale.
Professional piercing isn't just knowing how to make a hole. It's understanding placement, anatomy, jewelry, healing, and the long-term considerations that come with putting that hole there.
You Should Know What's Going Into Your Body
One of our biggest philosophies at Essential Ink is that clients should be able to ask questions.
Lots of them.
You should be able to ask:
What material is this jewelry?
Why are you recommending this size?
Why can't I start with that hoop?
How long will this take to heal?
When should I downsize?
Is this swelling normal?
Why aren't you recommending this piercing for my anatomy?
And you deserve more than “because that's how we do it.”
Part of professional piercing is client education.
We want you to understand what we're doing and why we're doing it.
Your piercing belongs to you long after you leave our studio.
Aftercare Shouldn't Be an Afterthought
Getting the piercing is the quick part.
Healing it is the commitment.
Depending on the placement, you're potentially going to spend months caring for your new piercing.
That's why our responsibility doesn't end when you walk out the door.
We'll talk about realistic healing expectations, appropriate aftercare, downsizing when necessary, things to avoid during healing, and signs that mean we'd like you to come back and let us take a look.
And if you're unsure about something?
Come see us.
We would much rather answer a question early than have you spend three weeks worrying about something—or trying every piercing “hack” you found online.
Does APP Membership Mean an APP Piercer Is Automatically Better Than Everyone Else?
No.
And we think that's important to say.
The APP does not certify piercing proficiency, and membership shouldn't be treated as a ranking system where APP member automatically means “good piercer” and non-member automatically means “bad piercer.”
There are talented, knowledgeable professional piercers who aren't APP members.
APP membership is one piece of information you can use when choosing your piercer.
Look at the entire picture.
Ask about jewelry.
Ask about sterilization.
Look at healed work—not just fresh piercings.
Pay attention to whether your anatomy is evaluated.
Ask questions.
Notice whether you feel educated or pressured.
A reputable professional shouldn't be bothered by an informed client.
We actually love informed clients.
So Why Did APP Membership Matter to Us?
Essential Ink Body Art has been serving our community since 2006.
Twenty years is something we're incredibly proud of.
But longevity shouldn't mean becoming comfortable with “this is how we've always done it.”
This industry continues to evolve.
Jewelry evolves. Equipment evolves. Research evolves. Education evolves. Best practices evolve.
And we want to evolve with it.
Pursuing APP membership wasn't about putting three letters after our names.
It was an opportunity to examine what we do, document it, evaluate it, improve where necessary, and hold ourselves accountable to standards beyond our own four walls.
After completing that process, we're incredibly proud that Essential Ink is now home to APP Member Piercers.
For us, it's not the finish line.
It's another step in continuing to become better at what we do.
What APP Membership Means When You Walk Through Our Door
Hopefully, you won't notice most of it.
You probably won't walk in thinking about our sterilization procedures.
You shouldn't have to spend your appointment worrying about jewelry documentation or infection-control protocols.
That's our job.
What we hope you notice is something much simpler.
That you're welcomed.
That we listen to you.
That we look at your anatomy before making promises.
That we explain your options.
That you can tell us your budget without embarrassment.
That you're comfortable asking questions.
That we're willing to say no when something isn't right for your body.
