Can You Get an MRI With Titanium Body Jewelry? What Piercing Clients Should Know

If you have body piercings and have ever been scheduled for an MRI, you've probably had the same immediate thought:
Do I have to take all of my jewelry out?
For someone with one healed piercing, that might not sound like a big deal. But if you have multiple piercings, a fresh or healing piercing, a dermal anchor, or jewelry that isn't easily removed, the question becomes much more important.
And if your jewelry is made from implant-grade titanium, you may have heard that titanium is "MRI safe."
The reality is a little more complicated.
While high-quality titanium body jewelry has characteristics that make it very different from many other metals, the decision about whether jewelry can remain in place during an MRI belongs to your MRI facility and medical team.
Here's what piercing clients should know before their appointment.
First: What Exactly Is an MRI?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Unlike an X-ray or CT scan, an MRI does not use ionizing radiation. Instead, it uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency energy, and a computer to create detailed images of structures inside the body.
That magnetic environment is exactly why patients are carefully screened for metal before entering the MRI room.
Ferromagnetic materials can be attracted to the MRI's magnetic field. Conductive materials may also present concerns involving heating, and metallic objects can interfere with the quality of the images being produced.
This is why MRI facilities ask about everything from medical implants to body piercings before a scan.
So...Is Titanium Magnetic?
Titanium is generally considered non-ferromagnetic, meaning it does not behave like strongly magnetic metals such as iron.
That's one of several reasons high-quality titanium is widely used for medical implants as well as professional body jewelry.
But there's an important distinction:
Knowing that a piece of jewelry is titanium isn't necessarily the same as knowing exactly what material you're wearing.
Professional piercing studios should be able to identify the material and manufacturer of the jewelry they install.

Does That Mean Implant-Grade Titanium Can Stay In During an MRI?
Not necessarily.

Your MRI facility has the final say about whether your body jewelry needs to be removed.
MRI facilities have their own screening and safety protocols. Many routinely instruct patients to remove metallic jewelry and body piercings before entering the MRI environment.
Even if you know that your jewelry is verified implant-grade titanium, you should never assume you can simply leave it in without telling your MRI technologist.
Instead, disclose every piercing and piece of jewelry during your MRI screening.
If you know the material and manufacturer, provide that information as well.
The MRI technologist or radiologist can then determine what is appropriate for your particular scan.
If Titanium Isn't Ferromagnetic, Why Would They Still Want It Removed?
There are several considerations beyond whether a piece of jewelry is strongly attracted to a magnet.
1. MRI Facilities Have Their Own Safety Policies
Some facilities may have policies requiring removable metallic body jewelry to be taken out regardless of its specific composition.
That's their call.
Your piercer shouldn't override instructions from your medical team, and your medical team shouldn't have to rely on a client's assumption about what their jewelry is made from.
This is another reason documentation and traceability matter in professional piercing.
2. Metal Can Affect the MRI Image
Metallic objects can cause what's called an artifact on an MRI image.
Essentially, the jewelry may distort or obscure part of the image.
This becomes particularly important when the piercing is near the area being examined.
For example, facial or ear jewelry could potentially interfere with imaging of nearby structures during certain head or facial scans.
In those situations, removing the jewelry may have less to do with the jewelry being "dangerous" and more to do with obtaining the clearest diagnostic image possible.
3. Heating Is Another Consideration
MRI uses radiofrequency energy in addition to its magnetic field.
Conductive materials can potentially experience heating under certain MRI conditions.
For typical body piercing jewelry, MRI-related heating is generally considered a relatively low risk because of the size and shape of most pieces. However, that does not mean the possibility should simply be dismissed.
This is another reason the MRI technologist—not your piercer, Google, TikTok, or a jewelry manufacturer—should make the final determination about what can remain in place during your particular scan.
What If My Piercing Is Still Healing?
This is where planning ahead becomes especially important.
Please don't simply remove jewelry from a fresh or healing piercing without discussing your options first.
A healing piercing can begin to shrink surprisingly quickly once jewelry is removed. Reinserting jewelry afterward may be difficult, uncomfortable, or sometimes impossible without professional assistance.
If you know you have an MRI coming up, contact the imaging facility before your appointment and ask about their body jewelry policy.
Tell them:
- Where your piercings are located
- Whether any are still healing
- What material the jewelry is made from, if known
- Whether any jewelry cannot easily be removed
If they tell you the jewelry must come out, contact your professional piercer ahead of time so you can discuss your options.
Don't wait until you're sitting in the MRI waiting room.
Can I Wear a Glass Retainer Instead?
In some situations, a nonmetallic retainer may be an option when jewelry needs to be temporarily removed.
For established piercings, appropriately sized glass jewelry can sometimes help maintain the piercing channel while metallic jewelry is out.
But this should also be planned ahead.
The appropriate jewelry depends on the piercing, its age, its condition, and what the medical facility will permit.
If you have an upcoming MRI, surgery, or other medical procedure, contact your piercer early enough that we can evaluate your piercing and discuss appropriate temporary jewelry if needed.
And, most importantly, confirm with the medical facility that the retainer is acceptable before your appointment.
What About Dermal Anchors?
Dermal piercings create a different situation because the anchor sits beneath the skin and isn't designed to be casually removed and reinserted like conventional body jewelry.
If you have a dermal anchor, tell your MRI facility about it when scheduling or during your pre-procedure screening, rather than waiting until the day of your scan.
Provide as much information about the jewelry material as you can.
The medical team can determine whether the jewelry presents a concern based on its material, location, and the type of MRI being performed.
Do not attempt to remove a dermal anchor yourself for an MRI.
If removal is medically required, talk with your piercer and medical provider about the appropriate next step.
What About Piercings That Are Difficult to Remove?
This comes up frequently with jewelry that clients have worn for years.
Maybe the end won't unscrew.
Maybe you can't reach it.
Maybe you're not sure whether it's threaded or threadless.
Or maybe you have fifteen pieces in your ears and the idea of removing and reinstalling everything yourself sounds like a nightmare.
That's exactly the kind of situation where your piercer can help.
If your medical provider requires your jewelry to be removed, schedule your removal before the medical appointment whenever possible.

This Is Also Why Jewelry Quality Matters
One overlooked benefit of purchasing jewelry through a reputable professional piercing studio is knowing what you're actually wearing.
There's a big difference between:
"The website said it was titanium."
and
"This jewelry came from a reputable manufacturer and the material specifications are known."
Terms such as "titanium," "surgical steel," and "hypoallergenic" are frequently used in jewelry marketing, but those words alone don't necessarily provide meaningful information about the exact composition or quality of a piece.
Professional body jewelry should have traceability behind it.
When we're choosing jewelry that may remain in someone's body for months or years, knowing what it's made from matters.
An unexpected MRI is just one more example of why.
Preparing for an MRI When You Have Piercings
If you have an MRI coming up, a little preparation can save you a lot of stress.
Before your appointment:

Tell the imaging facility you have body piercings.
Don't assume the jewelry is acceptable simply because you believe it's titanium.

Find out whether they require all body jewelry to be removed or whether your situation needs to be evaluated individually.

Tell them what material you're wearing if you know.
If your jewelry came from a professional piercing studio, contact the studio if you need help identifying it.

These may require additional planning.

Ask whether a nonmetallic retainer is permitted if jewelry must be removed.
Don't assume a retainer will automatically be accepted.

If your MRI facility tells you that jewelry must be removed for your scan, follow their instructions.

Sometimes we can install an appropriate temporary retainer.
Sometimes we can remove the jewelry immediately before the procedure and reinstall it afterward.
And occasionally, maintaining the piercing simply isn't compatible with the medical procedure that needs to happen.

So, can you get an MRI while wearing titanium body jewelry?
Potentially—but don't assume that means you can leave your jewelry in.
Verified implant-grade titanium is very different from unknown or potentially ferromagnetic jewelry. However, MRI safety involves more than whether a material sticks to a magnet. Jewelry can potentially cause heating, interfere with image quality, or conflict with an imaging facility's safety protocols.
